The Cerne Giant ~ the rather shocking giant naked man standing erect at 60 metres high by 50 metres wide is one of three ancient figures that have been immortalised in the chalk downlands of southern England.
One myth suggests that the Giant Naked man at Cerne Abbas has been used as a totem for fertility and suggests that a woman having problems conceiving would sit on the giant and become pregnant. There are fences surrounding the Cerne Giant to protect it from further erosion, so sitting on it for the purposes of fertility is no longer an option!
The origins of the Cerne Giant is still to be uncovered, rumours say he was the god Hercules and would be approximately 1500 years old, or perhaps a representation of Oliver Cromwell believed to be only 350 years old.
The Cerne Giant in Dorset was never mentioned until 1694 but perhaps people of Dorset were just too shy to mention a naked man in their hillside before this era? The Trendle stands besides the Cerne Giant. Likely useages to have been an ancient fortification, Iron Age temple or perhaps an Iron Age burial mound. Some even say that it could have been created as late as the early 1700's as the site for maypole dancing... Perhaps it's where pole dancing was originally invented!
